What is a Hemorrhoid?

Types of Hemorrhoids

Thrombosed — These are external hemorrhoids that eventually form a blood clot in the anal skin. Thrombosed hemorrhoids cause severe pain, swelling, and shows up as a hard lump near the anus.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hemorrhoids

What causes hemorrhoids? Veins swell due to pressure in the lower rectum, caused by straining during bowel movements (e.g. constipation), diarrhea, and obesity. Pregnant women are also prone to this, as the pressure of an enlarged uterus can cause blood vessels to swell.
Do hemorrhoids go away on its own? If your hemorrhoids are small, your symptoms may go away without treatment after a few days. Prolapsed hemorrhoids can take longer to heal and may require treatment from a doctor.
How long does it take to recover from hemorrhoid surgery? Recovery takes about 1-2 weeks, but it could also take 3-6 weeks to fully recover from post-surgery pain, bleeding, and discomfort.
Can hemorrhoids come back after being surgically removed? After several years, recurrences occasionally occur from external hemorrhoid removal and rubber band methods. But the hemorrhoid can be treated again using similar conservative techniques. It is rare for hemorrhoids to come back after being surgically removed.

Although an uncommon procedure, lateral internal sphincterotomy can help patients with high resting sphincter pressures.

Open Hemorrhoidectomy

This procedure is similar to closed hemorrhoidectomy, except that the wound will be left open. Open hemorrhoidectomy is the best option when the hemorrhoid’s location makes it hard to close the wound or when there’s a high risk of post-surgery infection.

Rubber Band Ligation

A surgeon will place a rubber band around the base of an internal hemorrhoid. This procedure effectively disrupts circulation, resulting in the hemorrhoid to fade away in a few days.

Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy for Prolapsing Hemorrhoids

This procedure is the best option for internal and prolapsed hemorrhoids, especially those that are considered grade III and grade IV. Surgeons will use a circular stapling device to cut a ring around the hemorrhoid tissue to get it back to its normal position.
